Overview

What to expect on this Greece food tour

Two days in Athens for the Varvakios market, souvlaki, loukoumades and a long meze lunch in Psyrri, then a short flight to Chania for bougatsa and raki, a cooking class in an Apokoronas village, a family olive oil mill and cheese from a shepherd in the White Mountains.

Cretan food is built on what grows on the island: olive oil in quantity, wild greens picked on the hillsides, sheep and goat cheese, barley rusks, honey, snails and lamb, with a glass of raki to begin and end the meal. Athens adds the city side of Greek eating, with its central market, street food and meze tavernas. This tour gives two days to the capital and four to western Crete.

In Athens the group walks the meat and fish halls of the Varvakios market, eats a koulouri on the go, souvlaki at Monastiraki and honey-soaked loukoumades, and settles in for a meze lunch in Psyrri. A fifty-minute flight takes you to Chania, with its Venetian harbor and old town bakeries. From there the days move inland to the villages of Apokoronas: a hands-on class in a family kitchen, an olive oil mill, a shepherd’s hut on the slopes of the White Mountains, and a Cretan winery.

Eleni Papadaki, who leads food walks in Chania and whose family presses its own oil in Apokoronas, hosts every departure. The November dates fall in the olive harvest and the season for distilling raki.

What you will taste

24 tastings on this Greece food tour

Tasting portions at the markets, producers, cellars and kitchens on the route, on top of the meals listed. Dishes follow the season, so one or two can change from date to date.

Drinks
Ouzo and tsipouro in Athens, tsikoudia raki in Crete, and Cretan wines from Romeiko, Vidiano and Liatiko. Alcohol is poured only for guests 18 and over, the legal drinking age in Greece, with ID; every pour has a non-alcoholic option.
Diets
Vegetarians eat well here, thanks to the Orthodox fasting dishes of greens, beans and pies. The class and the bakeries are built on pastry and rusks, so gluten-free guests get separate plates; dairy is in almost everything in Crete and hard to avoid. Severe allergies: ask Lena before you book.

Itinerary

Greece food tour itinerary: 7 days, day by day

Day 1 is the arrival day: meet your host at the hotel in the late afternoon. The order of the days can shift with the weather, the harvest or a kitchen that closes early; the places stay the same.

  1. Day1

    Arrive in Athens

Fresh fish on ice under the iron roof of the Varvakios market fish hall, Athens

Transfer from Athens airport to the hotel near Syntagma or Monastiraki, about forty-five minutes. In the evening Eleni walks the group to a taverna below the Acropolis for the welcome dinner: taramosalata, grilled octopus, horiatiki salad and lamb with lemon potatoes.

  2. Day2

    Varvakios market and Psyrri

Start with a koulouri, the sesame bread ring sold from street carts, and a Greek coffee. Then the Varvakios market on Athinas Street, through the meat and fish halls and the spice and cheese shops opposite. Souvlaki at Monastiraki, loukoumades with honey and cinnamon, and a long meze lunch in Psyrri with ouzo or tsipouro. Afternoon free for the Acropolis.

  3. Day3

    Fly to Chania

Stalls of fruit, spices, olives and cheese along the aisle of the Chania municipal market

A morning flight to Chania, about fifty minutes. Lunch in the old town, then a walk through Splantzia and the streets around the Agora, Chania’s cross-shaped market hall of 1913, for cheese, thyme honey, herbs and barley rusks. Sunset at the Venetian harbor and dinner by the water.

  4. Day4

    A village cooking class

Breakfast on bougatsa, flaky pastry filled with mizithra cheese and dusted with sugar. Then half an hour east into Apokoronas for a hands-on class in a village kitchen: kalitsounia cheese pies, dakos on barley rusks, wild greens with olive oil, and staka, the rich sheep’s milk cream, cooked with eggs. Lunch is what you cook, with a glass of tsikoudia, the Cretan raki.

  5. Day5

Olive oil and the White Mountains

The hillside village of Paidochori among olive trees below the White Mountains of Crete

Morning at a family olive mill in Apokoronas, a district with its own protected designation for oil, to see the press and taste oil on warm bread. Then up into the foothills of the White Mountains to a shepherd’s stone hut for graviera, mizithra and anthotyros made from the morning’s milk, and lamb cooked over wood. Free evening in Chania.

  6. Day6

    Cretan wine and a farewell

A slow morning in Chania. In the afternoon a family winery in the hills for Romeiko, the old red grape of western Crete, crisp Vidiano whites and Liatiko. Farewell dinner in a village taverna: chochlioi boubouristi, snails fried with rosemary and vinegar, gamopilafo, the wedding rice, and raki with fruit.

  7. Day7

    Depart from Chania

Breakfast and transfer to Chania airport, about twenty-five minutes, arriving around 10 am. Most flights home connect through Athens.

Before you book

Before you book this Greece food tour: honest notes

Pace and walking
Easy: two to three hours on foot in Athens and Chania, and short walks on uneven village paths in Apokoronas.
Your host
Eleni Papadaki. Eleni was born in Athens and moved to her mother’s village in Apokoronas, where the family still presses its own olive oil. A former schoolteacher, she has led food walks in Chania since 2018 and joined us in 2026. All our hosts
What can change
The order of the days can shift with the weather, a harvest or a kitchen that closes early. A stop of the same kind and value replaces anything that falls through.
Weather
Tours run in all weather. If a storm closes a boat trip or a farm visit, we move it or replace it, and if a serious weather warning stops the tour before it starts, you choose a new date or a full refund.
Arrival and departure
Arrive at Athens (ATH), leave from Chania (CHQ). Transfers are included at the group times on the first and last day.
Drinks and age
Adults only, 18 and over. Alcohol is poured only for guests 18 and over, the legal drinking age in Greece, with ID; every pour has a non-alcoholic option.
Diets and allergies
Vegetarian, pescatarian and gluten-free versions with notice when you book. Tell us about severe allergies first; we will say honestly what we can and cannot promise.
Luggage
One suitcase and a day bag. Leave space for olive oil, coffee or a bottle of wine, and check your home customs rules before you pack cured meat or fresh cheese.

Questions about this tour

Greece food tour FAQ

General questions on booking, flights, insurance and luggage are on the main FAQ page.

Ask Lena directly

Lena Ortiz in reservations replies within one working day, Monday to Friday.

Is there time to see the Acropolis?

Yes. The market walk on day 2 ends after lunch, so the afternoon is free for the Acropolis or the Acropolis Museum. Eleni can book timed tickets for you. Arrive a day early if you want a full day of sightseeing.

When is the olive harvest?

In western Crete the harvest runs from about November to January, so the November departure sees the mill at work and tastes oil pressed that week. In spring and early fall the mill is quiet, and the family shows the press and pours last season’s oil.

Is Cretan food good for vegetarians?

Very. Greek Orthodox fasting days produced a long list of dishes without meat: greens, beans, stuffed vegetables, pies and ladera, vegetables slow-cooked in olive oil. The shepherd’s lunch is lamb, and we arrange a vegetable plate there.

Can I add Sicily?

Yes. Sicily: Palermo Street Food, Modica Chocolate and Etna Wine runs in the same months, and Palermo is a short connecting flight from Athens.

Can I join on my own?

Yes. About a third of our guests travel solo. A single room on this tour costs $690 extra, and some dates have no single supplement; we can also try to match you with a roommate.

What if I have a food allergy or a special diet?

Tell Lena when you book. Vegetarian, pescatarian and gluten-free versions are arranged with every kitchen before you arrive; for severe allergies we tell you honestly which stops we can and cannot make safe.

What if I need to cancel or change?

Your $300 deposit holds the seat, the balance is due 60 days before departure, and you can move once to another date or tour free up to 45 days before. The full scale is on the booking terms page.

Should we tip the host?

Tips are welcome but never expected. Guests who want a guideline usually give 10 to 15 US dollars, or the same in local money, per person for a day walk, or per person per day on a multi-day tour; restaurant tips on included meals are already paid.
