Overview

What to expect on this French Quarter food tour

Six tastings in the oldest part of New Orleans: café au lait and a beignet, a muffuletta from a corner grocery, a cup of gumbo, a raw oyster, a warm praline and a Sazerac or a cold lemonade in a courtyard. Remy or another local host leads.

The French Quarter has been feeding people for three hundred years, and some of its counters have been open for more than a century. This walk links six of them in a loop of about a mile and a half, with the stories behind each dish: why a muffuletta needs olive salad, what makes a roux dark, and how the praline went from almond to pecan.

Portions add up to a full lunch, so come hungry. The walk runs in the late morning, Thursday to Saturday, all year, and ends near the French Market so you can keep shopping. Vegetarian and shellfish-free versions are easy with notice.

Itinerary

French Quarter food tour itinerary: 3.5 hours, day by day

The walk in order, with about ten minutes on foot between stops. The exact dishes follow the season and what the kitchens have that morning.

  1. Stop1

    Café au lait and beignets

Meet by the Cabildo on Jackson Square. First stop is a coffee stand for chicory café au lait and a beignet, while Remy explains the plan and how to pace yourself.

  2. Stop2

A muffuletta at the corner grocery

A short walk to an Italian grocery on Decatur Street, where the muffuletta, a round sesame loaf with salami, ham, provolone and olive salad, has been made since the early 1900s.

  3. Stop3

    Gumbo with a dark roux

A family restaurant serves a cup of chicken and andouille gumbo. Remy explains the difference between Creole and Cajun gumbo, and why some cooks argue about tomatoes.

  4. Stop4

    Oysters on Bienville Street

An oyster bar shucks Gulf oysters to order, raw or chargrilled with garlic butter and parmesan. Non-shellfish eaters get a cup of turtle soup or a fried green tomato.

  5. Stop5

    Pralines on Royal Street

A candy shop pours pralines from copper pots in the window: brown sugar, butter, cream and pecans. You taste one warm and take one home.

  6. Stop6

    A courtyard toast

The walk ends in a courtyard bar with a Sazerac for guests 21 and over, or a house lemonade, before Remy sends you off with a list of places for dinner.

Pace and walking
Easy: about a mile and a half on level streets, with a seat at most stops.

Questions about this tour

French Quarter food tour FAQ

General questions on booking, flights, insurance and luggage are on the main FAQ page.

Ask Lena directly

Lena Ortiz in reservations replies within one working day, Monday to Friday.

How much food is it?

Six tastings that add up to a generous lunch. Skip breakfast or keep it light.

Can children come?

Our tours are for adults, 18 and over. Guests under 21 get a non-alcoholic drink at the last stop.

What if it rains?

The walk goes ahead; most stops are indoors and the Quarter has balconies to walk under. We cancel with a full refund only for severe weather warnings.

Can I do more than one day?

Yes. New Orleans and Cajun Country is six days: a longer version of this walk, a Creole cooking class and three days of boudin and crawfish out west.

Can I join on my own?

Yes. About a third of our guests travel solo. A day tour has no room, so there is no supplement.

What if I have a food allergy or a special diet?

Tell Lena when you book. Vegetarian, pescatarian and gluten-free versions are arranged with every kitchen before you arrive; for severe allergies we tell you honestly which stops we can and cannot make safe.

What if I need to cancel or change?

Day tours can be cancelled free up to 72 hours before the start, or moved to another date.

Should we tip the host?

Tips are welcome but never expected. Guests who want a guideline usually give 10 to 15 US dollars, or the same in local money, per person for a day walk, or per person per day on a multi-day tour; restaurant tips on included meals are already paid.
